Automatic writing is a form of writing in which the writer allows their hand to write without conscious control, in order to tap into their subconscious mind or to receive messages from a spiritual realm. The writer may hold a pen or pencil, or use a computer or other writing instrument, and allow their hand to write without actively controlling the process. The resulting writing is believed to be a message from the unconscious mind, or from a spiritual or otherworldly source. Automatic writing is often used as a form of divination or as a tool for personal growth and self-discovery. It is also used in certain spiritual practices such as spiritism, spiritualism and some forms of mediumship.
